Local Data. Local Voices. Local Models.

Why Nigeria’s energy future depends on all three.

Local Data. Local Voices. Local Models.

For far too long, Nigeria's energy planning has relied on foreign models, global data averages, and top-down decisions.

The result?

A system that is inefficient, unreliable, and unfit for our unique context.

It's time for a new approach.

The Problem

  • Mismatched Assumptions:

Global models, sometimes, assume stable grids, uniform consumption patterns, and centralized systems. They fail to capture Nigeria's reality: an unreliable national grid, vibrant informal economies, and a diverse mix of urban and extreme rural needs.

  • Blind Spots:

Without hyper-local data, we can't see the true potential for solar in Kano vs. hydro in Jos, or understand the energy needs of a Lagos SME vs. a Niger Delta farming cooperative.

  • Ineffective Solutions:

This leads to wasted investments, misplaced infrastructure, and policies that look good on paper but fail on the ground.

The Solution

  • Local Data:

Geospatial data on sun hours, wind speeds, population density, and economic activity. This is the factual foundation.

  • Local Voices:

Engaging communities, women, developers, and SMEs to understand real needs and barriers. Amplifying African expertise in the global energy conversation. This is the human context.

  • Local Models:

Open-source energy modeling tools (like OSeMOSYS, PyPSA) customized with our local data to test scenarios, optimize for our least-cost mix, and plan for a system that works for Nigeria. This is the tailored engine.

Data provides the 'what,' voices provide the 'why,' and models provide the 'how'."

The Action

  • For Government & Regulators (NERC, REA):

Mandate and fund the collection of open, sub-national energy data. Adopt open-source models for transparent, reproducible energy planning.

  • For Developers & Utilities:

Co-create solutions with communities, not for them. Use local data to de-risk investments.

  • For Professionals & Academia:

Build capacity! Train on open-source modeling. Contribute to local data sets. Champion local case studies.

  • For All of Us:

Amplify local experts. Support platforms like @TheEnergyAfrica (shameless plug!) that elevate homegrown voices.

The Vision: A Future Built by Nigeria, for Nigeria

Imagine an energy system that is:

  • Resilient: Optimized for Nigeria's resources and needs.

  • Inclusive: Designed with and for its people, creating local jobs and equity.

  • Efficient: Attracting investment because the data de-risks it.

  • Sustainable: Powering growth without costing the earth.

This isn't just about energy. It's about agency. It's about using our data, amplifying our voices, and building our models to secure our future.
